Temple Talk

July 5770 /2009-2010

From The President

Dear Congregants,

I am pleased to announce that on July 13, 2010, the proposed buyer of our 1.75
acres of Kaliste Saloom property accepted and signed our counter-offer. The buyer
is Christy Dillane who owns AHS Walk-In Clinic. I understand a Walk-In Clinic will be
on the corner property (also purchased) and two free-standing medical offices will
occupy the Temple Shalom property.

The buyer has 120 days to close the sale. Should the sale not take place, the
buyer’s $5,000 escrow deposit will revert to Temple Shalom.

Therefore, before November 15, 2010, the Kaliste Saloom property will be
sold for $692,168 ($9.08/sq. ft). After realty fees (6%), the Temple Shalom will net
$650,638. The buyer also has the option of closing earlier than the 120 days.

When the property was placed for sale, the Board of Trustees at that time
voted to have any proceeds of a sale placed into an Endowment Fund where only the
interest is used. Therefore, the Board is investigating two endowments: The Jewish
Endowment Foundation of Louisiana (based in New Orleans) and the Community
Foundation of Lafayette. The interest generated from the funds will be used to
enhance our rabbinic leadership. We will be looking to grow that endowment to at
least $1 million as soon as possible.

At the August Board Meeting, the Board will prioritize goals for this coming
year. A few goals on the list are membership growth, more programming, outreach to
non-Jewish spouses, rejuvenating the Youth Group, rabbinic leadership, while
supporting and strengthening the Religious School. Feel free to contact me and/or
any board member to give your input.

Remember that the High Holy Days are early this year. Rosh Hashana Eve
services will be held Wednesday, September 8th with Rosh Hashana services on
Thursday, September 9th. Now is certainly an exciting time for Temple Shalom to
begin the year 5771! Your participation and volunteerism will be crucial to our future
success!

Edye

From the Rabbi

                                      When I Pray
When I Pray...
I remember that in Hebrew "to pray" is "
l'hit'pa'lel"

This verb is the root of Tefilah and Tefillin. The verb in Hebrew has the deeper
meaning
"To judge oneself." Thus, when I pray I do enter into a time of self-judgment and
introspection.

When I Pray...
All the many blessings in my life pass before me.

I offer thanks for the most precious gifts of home, love, and friendship.
I give thanks for the gifts of healing, health, strength and life itself.

When I Pray...
I think of all those less fortunate than myself, struggling to simply survive in
these difficult economic times, all who are unemployed, in poverty, and especially
now everyone so adversely affected by the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

When I Pray...
I offer thanks for the sacred privilege, and the awesome responsibility, of serving
as Rabbi of Temple Shalom.
I pray so very deeply for wisdom, strength, and proper insights to help guide
our congregation and contribute to its growth.

When I Pray...
I remember so keenly those of our temple family who are ill. My prayers prompt
me to be certain that I'm doing everything possible to bring encouragement, trust
and hope to each of them and their loved ones.

When I Pray...
I draw near to God as I remember all the goodness, all the blessings, and all the
very wonder of life, one day at a time, one moment at a time. For each time I pray
I surely thank Ha Shem, God, for my life, my loving family and friends, and always
for the blessings that are mine as your rabbi.

May the words of my mouth and every meditation of my heart be acceptable to
You, O God, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Amen

Rabbi Barry announces New Mussar Group!
                                       Come learn Mussar!
What is Mussar?
Mussar is " a path of contemplative practices and exercises that have evolved
over the past thousand years to help an individual soul pinpoint and break though
barriersthat surround and obstruct the flow of inner light in our lives," as described
by Dr. Alan Morinis, founder of the Mussar Institute. ( mussarinstitute.org)

In Mussar we study and contemplate our "Middot," the traits of our soul!

I have now completed my first year of Guided Mussar Study, and over six months of
supervision as a facilitator for a Mussar group.

Our first Temple Shalom Mussar Group has completed its seven sessions over several
weeks. This experience of facilitating our group has been most meaningful spiritually
for me and I hope that we shall begin anew after the High Holy Days.

Please visit mussarinstitute.org to learn more, and / or check out Dr Morinis'
" Climbing Jacob's Ladder, " his first book about Mussar. Also please feel
free to contact me for more information (
Barry.Weinstein@yahoo.com) or
phone me at our home, 225-757-6457 or my cell 225-571-4798.

Our group generally meets every two to three weeks at a mutually agreeable
time, and each participant has a "chevruta" ( partner ) to talk about and study
Mussar texts that are then reviewed by the group as a whole.

Tuition is $100, and scholarships are available. The tuition is payable to the
Mussar Institute. I volunteer as facilitator.

I know that once you step into this fascinating world of Mussar, your life, like
mine, will surely be very deeply touched, and even quite surprisingly, transformed!

Temple Shalom 5771 Yearbook
I will soon be putting together the Temple Shalom 5771 Yearbook. As you recall there
is always a page in the front with a New Year Greeting. I change this page each year
with a new message. The purpose of this page is to allow you to wish L’Shanah Tovah
to all the Members of Temple Shalom. Instead of having to address and mail out
greeting cards on your own, you can just add your name to this page. A Donation of
Chai x 18 …$18.00 is all it costs. Checks are to be made to Temple Shalom and mailed
to me, Marilyn Kleban, 107 Buddy Drive, Lafayette, LA 70508. Be sure to tell me how
you want your name listed. The money collected is used to pay for the printing of the
yearbook thus all members of the temple in good standing receive a copy free before
Services on Rosh Hashanah Eve. Non members will be able to purchase a copy. I am
hoping that the list will be so large this year that I will need two pages. Checks must
be in my hands no later than August 12. How about putting yours in the mail now as
you read this announcement.

If you have any changes to how your name is listed in the Yearbook, new e-mail
addresses, cell phone numbers, fax numbers etc please let me have these changes
NOW. Please look over last year’s book and make sure that all your information is up
to date. E-mail me your changes, thanks.

ask Len Springer, our administrative V. Pres., to give you a new one. This is a very
easy way to earn money for our temple.

                            We Remeber Them

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them
When we are weary and in need of stength, we remember them
When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them
When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them
     So long as we live,
      They too shall live
For they are now a part of us
        As we remember them

Congregation News
The Congregation would like to take this opportunity to express
how very sorry we were to learn of all the water damage done to
Rabbi Barry and Lindas condo that they found upon returning
home from their wonderful vacation. Keep them in your thoughts
and prayers as this is a very stressful and sad time for them. I am
sure that hearing from you would be very comforting to them.
Collectable Place Settings for Sale

Are you interested in a good deal on some highly collectable place settings that Temple Shalom
owns and that our board members decided to sell because we no longer use them? We would like
to offer items in the collection to members of the congregation before selling them on the open
market. The collection is Fire-King Jadite in the Jane Ray pattern from the 1950s. Martha
Stewart has recently created a line of reproductions, but these are the real deal. You may
purchase the following items at the low end of the range of values listed in the 2002 price guide
most commonly used as a reference.
